He doesn’t dream that she could feel insecure about her abilities. Or insecure around someone like him. So the pause doesn’t register as hesitation as much as it seems like she must be collecting her thoughts. Trying to put into words something unique and amazing into something he could grasp.
Everything is special about this girl. You can’t even say she puts her pants on one leg at a time like anyone else, because she doesn’t. It makes him wonder how anyone with so many gifts could be satisfied with someone like him - a man who spent virtually every moment he can remember just trying to prove people should notice him. All he can think to do is to cover up those thoughts and feelings with the most charming smile he can manage.
