It's a good and fair question for which she does not have any non-crazy-sounding answers. Trying to explain the immense societal pressure she grew up under to apologize for everything because emotional stuff is 'women's work', a prejudice of which she's aware and to which she is none the less vulnerable, seems inappropriate at this point and also really depressing.
Holding his hand is nice. She'll focus on that.
