Responsibility, duty, honor - those traits were always so very ingrained in Leia, but did they have to be in Ben? Especially if it means seeing him suffer and then use that same suffering to lash out at other people. He'd sooner see him become a moisture farmer on some desert planet or grinding out his days in a manufacturing plant on an industrial mecca. Fishing on an ocean world. Anything. It was all better than this.
It never occurred to him that in trying to point him the right way, he and Leia had robbed him of his free will. No doubt the elder Solo would have been furious and bitter himself if, into his thirties, he still felt like everyone else was the master of his destiny. If someday he should want to run back into the fray, no doubt there would still be battles to fight in their war-torn home, then let it be his choice to do that too.
The way this old man had ultimately choose it for himself.
"Be the man you want to be, Ben." He says. "Forget about what anyone thinks you should do. Your mom and I included."
