He is trying to keep her from it. He's convinced himself that it couldn't have been Rey who broke a glass while she was sleeping, so it's not the guilt he thinks he's keeping her from (though he would if he realized what was going on). It's the worry, he supposes, that he's sparing her from.
For the record, there are a lot of sleazy things that he would do to make things better for the people he loves. Lying is on the tip of the iceberg.
