He tries not to take it personally that she would ask that. He's got his own emotional hang ups from parents who were gone when he was just barely old enough to comprehend their absence. It affects a person deeply, having that happen to them. Still, he wished that his actions had spoke louder than they ultimately had.

"Of course not." He murmurs, adopting a soothing tone without even thinking about it. "I know you haven't been on the ship that long, but I hardly remember what it was like before you were here."
